I've enjoyed creating art since I was a child. In school I explored western drawing and painting techniques and found I was drawn to intimate subject matter- people and still-lives- rather than
landscapes. I had a knack for portraiture, and loved the appreciation and connection I felt when drawing people.

Mid-college career I lived in Taiwan for a year where I studied Chinese and Chinese calligraphy. When I came back I majored in Chinese. This had a lasting impact on my art. I adopted the medium
of brush and ink and rice paper that I had so enjoyed using while practicing the meditative art of calligraphy. I loved the challenge of painting with brush and ink, the delicacy of the rice paper, and
the experimental nature of using Chinese tools to paint from life in the western way.

For some years I painted only in black and white, and only from life. Then I added color and stepped out of the frame of just painting people or still lives. I have explored my own inner landscape
from spontaneous design to existential feelings, and enjoy the adventure of experimenting and seeing what happens next!

Thanks,
Rebecca
